Dr. Kevin Wang, Math Zoom Academy. Founding Director and Head Coach since 2006.

Dr. Kevin Wang was a member of the very first Chinese IMO Team in 1985. Dr. Wang was the top scorer in Beijing, China in AHSME and AIME 1985, and winner of multiple national & international contests in math and science in China. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Pennsylvania State University, and worked as Assistant Professor and Researcher in Mathematics at UC Irvine and UCLA from 1997 to 1999. Dr. Wang also has broad experiences in industry, working at technology and media corporations such as Oracle and News Corp.

Dr. Wang was invited to teach at the MOSP (Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program) in 2007. The MOSP is an all-expense-paid program, and only the top 50 participants of the USAMO are chosen to attend. The 6 members of the IMO team for USA are selected from MOSP participants. Dr. Wang currently serves as member of Advisory Board for AMC (American Mathematical Competitions).


Dr. Harold B. Reiter, University of North Carolina Charlotte. Math Zoom Summer Camp Faculty since 2007.

Dr. Harold B. Reiter is a Professor of Mathematics at UNCC. He chaired the American Mathematics Competitions AHSME Committee from 1993 to 2000. He has been the state director of the AMC for North Carolina since 1979. He currently serves on the College Board's College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) Pre Calculus Mathematics Committee; chairs the MAA's Edith May Sliffe Award Committee. He is a former chair and member of the MATHCOUNTS Question Writing Committee; former member of AIME and USAMO committees, former chair of SAT II Test Development Committee with ETS; Numerous other awards, honors, and publications. Dr. Paul Dreyer, RAND Corporation. Math Zoom Year Round and Summer Camp Faculty since 2007.

Dr. Paul Dreyer is a mathematician at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, CA. At RAND, Dr. Dreyer uses mathematical modeling techniques on a wide variety of military, energy, and security issues. He received his PhD in mathematics from Rutgers University in 2000, writing his dissertation on the applications of graph theory to problems in facilities placement, modeling opinion formulation in groups, and methods to speed up searches through protein sequence databases. Prior to joining RAND, Dr. Dreyer spent summers working at the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, MD and one of its subcontractors, the IDA Center for Computing Science in Bowie, MD researching topics in cryptography and computer security.

In addition to his work at RAND, Dr. Dreyer serves as the Western Site Coordinator for the American Regions Mathematics League, a national math contest for high school students, and also serves on the question writing committee. Dr. Dreyer has taught courses in the electrical engineering department at UCLA and is also a professor at the Pardee RAND Graduate School, teaching a mathematics course for public policy students. Dr Dreyer also teaches at Math Zoom Year-round programs.


Professor Steven Davis. Math Zoom Year Round and Summer Camp Faculty since 2009.

Professor Davis is an active problem writer for AMC series of competitions. He has been a Math Professor in several Cal State University and Community College campuses. He is a former State Director of AMC for California. He also teaches at the Math Zoom Year-round Program.


Kelly Ren, Math Zoom Academy and Kiddie Techie. Math Zoom Year Round and Summer Camp Faculty since 2007.

With strong passion in Children and Human Development and extensive technology background, Ms. Ren co-founded Kiddie Techie, Inc., a computer-based learning program. Ms. Ren has been the director and chief curriculum developer of Kiddie Techie. Under her direction, Kiddie Techie has quickly expanded to more than 30 schools, districts and cities in Southern California within two years. Ms. Ren has broad experiences in the technology industries such as Information Technology, Electronics, and Semiconductors. She has served in technical professional and management positions in technology and financial services companies including IBM, Optum Software, and Washington Mutual. Ms. Ren has a MS degree in Electrical Engineering from Penn State University, and a Bachelor degree in Physics.

Ms. Ren is the Camp Director of Math Zoom Summer Program 2009.


Sean Markan, Art of Problem Solving. Math Zoom Summer Camp Coach in 2008.

Sean Markan is an instructor at Art of Problem Solving. Mr. Markan participated in numerous math and science programs in high school, including the USAMO in 2001 (received Honorable Mention), the Math Olympiad Summer Program in 2001 and the US Physics Olympiad Team in 2000 and 2002. He graduated from MIT with a degree in physics in 2006. He enjoys playing piano, ultimate frisbee, and of course math.


Gordon Dilger. Retired Math Teacher. Math Zoom Summer Camp Coach in 2008.

Gordon Dilger is Valley Math Circle's AIME mentor for the last 2 years. Mr. Dilger also taught AMC 8/10/12 prep classes at Seoul Music/New Hope Academy, which is a Jumping Brain Affiliate. Prior to his AMC/AIME sessions he had also done MathCounts coaching in 2005/6. Mr. Dilger holds a BA in Math and a MS in Computer Science.


Louise Dilger. Retired Math Teacher. Math Zoom Summer Camp Coach in 2008.

Louise Dilger has a BA degree in Mathematics from USC and holds a current California teaching credential. Her 20-year teaching career includes teaching mathematics up through Algebra II, primarily in middle/junior high school. She taught for eight years at a highly gifted magnet school. The mathematics curriculum included competition activities such as Continental Math League, AMC 8, and AMC 10. For the past eight years, she has coached for the MATHCOUNTS competition as an after-school program. Her teams always scored first or second place in the Chapter Competition, qualifying them to advance to the State level at Irvine, California, where her team always placed highly, and won First Place once. Tedrick Leung, 2007 IMO bronze medalist, was her student.


Dr. Zuming Feng, Phillips Exeter Academy (PEA). Math Zoom Summer Camp Coach in 2007, and Winter Camp Coach in 2006.

Dr. Zuming Feng has been Coach of the US IMO Team since 1997. He was US IMO Deputy Team Leader from 2000 to 2002, and has been the Team Leader from 2003 till now. He has served as the Academic Director of MOSP since 2003, and a USAMO Committee member since 1999. He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Feng currently teaches at the Phillips Exeter Academy (PEA), and is two-time MAA Sliffe Award winner for Distinguished Teaching. He is the Advisor of PEA Math Club.


Andy Niedermaier, University of California, San Diego. Math Zoom Summer Camp Coach in 2007.

Andy Niedermaier is a Ph.D candidate in the Math Department at UC San Diego. He graduated in 2004 with honors with a degree in mathematics from Harvey Mudd College. In high school, he was a member of a championship ARML team, a 4-time USAMO participant, and was invited to MOSP to study with the top math students in the country. He went on to be a national high scorer on the Putnam Exam in college, as well as winning the Meritorious Award in the Math Competition in Modeling (MCM). Today Mr. Niedermaier is one of the writers for the ARML competition, as well as for other math contests. He enjoys many games and sports, particularly cribbage.




INVITED SEMINAR SPEAKERS

Dr. Christoph Thiele, Department Chair and Professor, Math Department, UCLA. Invited Speaker at Math Zoom Summer Camp 2008

Dr. Thiele is a young and accomplished professor and department chair at the Math Department of UCLA. He received his Ph.D. degree at the age of 27 from Yale University. He became a full professor at the age of 34. And he became the Department Chair at the age of 38. Professor Thiele gave an one-hour speech on the Mathematical Research and Applications Areas at the closing ceremony of the Math Zoom Summer Camp 2008.


Angelo E. Bastianpillai, Senior Actuary and CAS Fellow. Invited Speaker at Math Zoom Summer Camp 2008.

Mr. Angelo E. Bastianpillai is a young and accomplished Senior Actuary in the Insurance Industry. He gives a speech on the career path, day-to-day life, salary structure, pros and cons as an actuary.


Raissa R.Z. Diamante, Assistant Director of Admission, Harvey Mudd College. Invited Speaker at Math Zoom Summer Camp 2008.

Ms. Raissa R.Z. Diamante is an Assistant Director of Admission in Harvey Mudd College. She came to the camp to tell the scoop of the admission and scholarship selection process at Harvey Mudd College. She talked about the academic programs, the culture, the undergraduate involvement in research, and several other things that make Harvey Mudd College one of the top colleges.


Ruth Rodriguez, Admission Officer, UCLA. Invited Speaker at Math Zoom Summer Camp 2008.

Ms. Ruth Rodriguez is an Admission Officer in UCLA. She came to the camp to talk about the admission process and scholarship options at UCLA. She talked about the academic programs, the culture, the campus, the Westwood area, and several other things that make UCLA one of the top public universities.


Bruce Arnold, UCSD. Invited Speaker at Math Zoom Summer Camp 2007.

Bruce Arnold is the Director of Mathematics Testing and Placement, the Site Director for the Mathematics Testing and Diagnostic Project (MDTP), and a part-time lecturer in the Mathematics Department at UCSD. He coordinates the High School Honors Mathematics Contest (now in its 50th year) and the High School Honors Statistics Contest (just held its 1st contest) for the university. He also provides logistical and administrative support to the San Diego Math Circle and MATHCOUNTS for meetings and events at UCSD.


Richard Rusczyk, Art of Problem Solving (AoPS Inc.) Invited Speaker at Math Zoom Summer Camp 2007

Richard Rusczyk is the founder of AoPS Inc. He is one of the co-authors of the Art of Problem Solving textbooks, one of the co-creators of the Mandelbrot Competition, and the Director of the USA Mathematical Talent Search. He was a participant in National MATHCOUNTS, a three-time participant in the Math Olympiad Summer Program, and a USA Mathematical Olympiad winner (1989). He graduated from Princeton University in 1993, helped inaugurate ESPN's SportsFigures program, and worked as a bond trader for D.E. Shaw & Company for four years. AoPS marks Richard's return to his vocation - educating motivated students.

Mr. Rusczyk gave a lecture to the MathZoom Campers introducing math careers in the financial world.


Manda Riehl, University of California, San Diego. Invited Speaker at Math Zoom Summer Camp 2007.

Manda Riehl is a fifth year Ph.D. candidate in the Dept. of Mathematics at UCSD. Her dissertation is in algebraic combinatorics (specifically symmetric functions and permutation patterns). She attended MIT as an undergraduate, where she received her degree in Mathematics and teaching certification. In high school, she attended Governor's School, a 6 week summer program in mathematics. At MIT, for two summers she was a math TA at the MIT Women's Technology Program. She loves teaching mathematics and especially combinatorics.
